MAFILL® Keeps the Engine Dry

September 01, 2016

Plastic water deflectors in the majority of cars today prevents the rain water or windscreen washer fluid flowing directly into the engine compartment. In the Opel Adam and Zafira models, these deflectors are produced from MAFILL® CR HT 6344 H UV, a PP compound based on recycled polypropylene. “We are trying to employ plastic components with past lives – recycled – whenever it makes technical sense,” says Uwe Ruster, Plastics Engineer, Opel. “The water deflector, located below windshield, features a complex geometry and has to meet the heaviest demands,” explains Uwe Ruster. The component is exposed to mechanical strain, temperature changes, and UV rays, while remaining strong and sturdy after decades in service.

The water deflector is a 2-component injection-molded part with a base body from Talc filled PP MAFILL® and over-molded sealing from TPE.
